George Orwell s Brave New World - 1279 Words
It has been said that literature and art reflect common beliefs and sentiments from the time period in which it was created, especially so for literature. Throughout history it has been observed that a personââ¬â¢s writing reveal historical moments and the gathered consciousness of a generation. George Orwell wrote ââ¬Å"1984â⬠in response to the impeding totalitarianism of the Soviet Union over Europe on the cusp of WWII after having experience the regime first hand in Spain. ââ¬Å"1984â⬠displays the fears of living under a totalitarian society along, warning readers not to become mindless followers to the government and to question authority figures along with the order of things. Similarly, ââ¬Å"Brave New Worldâ⬠by Aldous Huxley was written partially inâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In ââ¬Å"1984â⬠people are categorized into three sections of the hierarchy , the inner party, the outer party and the proles. The inner party gets the best treatment, be ing able to eat real food with favors, and live in nice houses, the proles get the worse treatment and have to live in shabby houses with limited resources, and the outer party is in the middle, having more resources than the proles but not as many privileges as the inner party members. In the novel, Winston describes the treatment of the proles and how the rest of society views them, saying ââ¬Å" the Party taught that the proles were natural inferiors who must be kept in subjection, like animalsâ⬠¦all that was required of them was primitive patriotism which could be appealed to whenever it was necessary to make them accept longer work hours and shorter rationsâ⬠(71 Orwell). From this passage it is clear to see that society looks down upon the proles, comparing them to animals that mindlessly accept their own oppression. The characterization of the proles mirrors that of the lower class in todays society. In the modern world people often look down on the lower class and individuals who work blue collar jobs, viewing them as less than or inferior. Moreover, many individuals that can be categorized as lower class often work long hours and receive just enough money to get by, a direct correlation to the proles treatment.
